TOEFL or IELTS for a MIM degree?

The question can be confusing for a lot of people out there but is definitely not an impossible task to answer. The team of experts at ForeignAdmits have compiled a list of the most commonly asked questions regarding the above two exams. But before that, you can know a few things about this awesome degree here.

In the United Kingdom, a master’s degree in management is a one-year (can be two years as well) management program that seeks to replace the traditional MBA degree. Its goal is to prepare recent graduate students from a variety of academic disciplines for managerial professions. The cost of a Masters in Management in the United Kingdom starts from anywhere around 20k pounds, which is much less than the Indian B-Schools out there. To get into that program, you have to pass an English Proficiency test – primarily IELTS or TOEFL, an exam that will prove your proficiency in the English language.

MIM program in the UK

MIM is becoming more popular in the UK as an alternative to completing an MBA degree. Admission to this program at UK universities does not require any prior work experience. Students applying to universities in the United Kingdom that offer MIM must not only meet normal admission requirements but also meet country-specific qualifying criteria. To get into institutions in the United Kingdom, Indian students must have a minimum of 60% in their bachelor’s degree.

Most universities in the United Kingdom have identical admissions requirements for Masters of Management programs. Applicants from any field of study are eligible to apply for a Masters in Management program in the United Kingdom.

The UK government established new rules for secure English language testing for visa and immigration purposes on April 6, 2015. Because most UK colleges are Tier 4 Sponsors, you should be able to use a score from any IELTS test centre, as well as scores from other exams including the TOEFL iBT and PTE Academic.

Why do you need IELTS or TOEFL for MIM degree?

If you want to apply for a Master of Management (MiM) program in English and your first language is not English, you will likely need to take the TOEFL or  IELTS.

TOEFL and IELTS are the two most important English language tests that help business schools assess their communication potential.

As an international student, you must demonstrate sufficient written and spoken  English skills to support your application. This can be done by taking the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) academic exam.

  • Do your MIM from abroad

Do I have to take the IELTS or the TOEFL for MIM admissions?

Maybe. Generally, if your first language is not English, you will need to take the IELTS or  TOEFL before applying for a MIM program. However, business schools can waive this requirement if you have completed your preliminary studies in English.

What do I take:  IELTS or  TOEFL?

Some business schools may require you to take the exam. Others may give you a choice.

 How are tests performed?

In general, both TOEFL and IELTS are delivered on computers in test centers around the world. Currently, both tests can be performed in more than 130 countries. In some places without the Internet, the TOEFL also has a paper version of the test as well.

How are  TOEFL and IELTS assessed?

Each test has different evaluation methods. The Internet-based TOEFL test is scored with a range of 0-120 points. There are four sections (reading, speaking, listening, and writing),  each rated on a scale of  0 to 30. For the speaking section, examinees record their responses to questions that are sent to reviewers for grading.

The IELTS also has four sections (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking), and each section is scored between 0 and 9 on a tape scale. These points are averaged to determine the examinee’s total tape score. The speaking component takes place in a one-to-one attitude.

 What score do I need?

It depends. Some business schools may have minimum score requirements. For example, to apply for the Master of Administration from ESSEC Business School, you need a minimum TOEFL score of 90 or a minimum IELTS score of 6.5. Others may not have a minimum score, but they will let you know which scores they think are competitive.

ELP is an important part of the admissions process for international students. Applicants should make sure to submit their English test scores along with the application for admission.

On average, we can expect a minimum range of 5.5 for courses in the UK, with a range of 6.5+ for the main few universities.

How do I submit my IELTS or TOEFL results?

 Is TOEFL easier than IELTS?

IELTS and TOEFL  test basic English language skills. Most test-takers consider IELTS  easier than TOEFL. Many students believe that the IELTS reading area is easier than the TOEFL reading area.

What is a good TOEFL score?

A “good” TOEFL score depends on your abilities related to your speaking, reading, listening and writing skills. Colleges tend to set the bar for certain scoring requirements.

Some schools require fairly high scores of over 100 TOEFL, while others require scores of 80+. According to a US News article, the minimum TOEFL average requirement for US universities is 78.

In general, the more competitive a school is, the higher the minimum TOEFL score required. Most applicants must have a bachelor’s degree equivalent to the UK’s 1st or upper 2nd class honors degree (2: 1).

What if you don’t clear these tests?

You can continue to apply to the university of your choice or other universities if you want to and receive a conditional offer as long as you meet the language requirements. You can then confirm your offer with the successful results of your second test.

It is possible to study in the UK without an IELTS as there are a variety of universities in the country that you can apply to without language skills. These universities include Swansea University, Birmingham City University, Robert Gordon University, and the University of Bristol.
