About Erasmus Mundus Scholarship
Originally the Erasmus program targeted the European Union countries. Through this program, students can travel and study in the other participating nations. However, after Brexit, UK students cannot avail the Erasmus scholarship and nor can Erasmus scholars opt for Universities in the UK.
Now, coming to the Erasmus Mundus scholarship or program, it is a parallel program like the parent Erasmus program that allows students to travel and study in Europe but it extends to all students globally. It’s aim is to globalise the European countries and to increase the internationalisation of students. Thus, Indian students can now travel to Europe to study and that too free of cost through this scheme.
However, the Erasmus program opened to India only in 2004. Since then more than 6000 Indian students have benefitted from the Erasmus plus scholarship. Also, India has become the largest beneficiary in the world outside of Europe. Additionally, last year in 2020, 134 Indian students were awarded the Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters Degree (EMJMD).
Further, there are two types of scholarships for Indian students under the scheme, the Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters Degree and the Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorates. Additionally, the scholarships cover participation costs, insurance only for the duration of the study period, subsistence costs, etc.
Students get a chance to study in at least 2 European countries and can choose from 130 master’s programs. However, students can only apply to universities in the program countries. The list of the program countries is given here:
- Czech Republic
- North Macedonia
